Work at height cannot be improvised.
It is important to ask the right questions before any intervention in order to identify the possible risks and the best solution.
The fall-arrest system must be properly connected to perform its function. Type and length will depend on the following questions (notion of air draft, fall factor, pendulum effect)
•In addition to use, the correct wearing of PPE is essential to guarantee optimal safety: the safety harness must be of the right size and adjusted correctly.
Before any intervention, carry out an in-depth analysis of the work to be performed, the risks related to the intervention and the environment.
•What is the intervention to be carried out at height?
•What are the risks associated with the intervention and the environment?
-How do you access the work area? Should access be secured?
-Is it possible to use a collective system? (see our SECURLINE solutions for collective protection) or do you need an individual solution?
-At what height? What is the clearance? (space available under the user’s feet, between the user and the ground or the first obstacle against which the user could strike in the event of a fall)
•Where can I attach my fall arrest system? (prefer factor 0 wherever possible and in the axis of the anchor – see Fall factor section)
•Are there any obstacles? (risk of collision and possible pendulum effect depending on the position of the anchor – see section pendulum effect)
•Can I work in restraint? (so that no fall is possible – see restraint solution section)
-Are operators trained? Working at height requires perfect mastery of the operation: this can only be achieved after appropriate training and choice of suitable equipment.
-What rescue equipment is available? (means of rapid evacuation)
•Should the tools necessary for the intervention be secured (is there a risk that these tools will fall)? Consult our tool lanyard solutions
-If the equipment is not new, is it still fit for purpose? Has it been inspected by a person trained and competent to check PPE at least once a year, as required by law?
-Etc.
The answer to these different questions will help you to define the safety solution adapted to your intervention.
The duration and frequency of use should also help determine the level of range needed.
